Reading Comprehension (RC) 30 Q: Which of the following best describes the difference between species and ecosystems? A: An ecosystem is a natural system made up of interrelated populations living in a certain space and time, whilea species is one population belonging to an organism.
LONGER ANSWER: Ecosystems are collections of organisms interacting with each other within their physical environment, and species are simple statistical units used by ecologists to describe or measure parts of these systems. For example, a particular species can be at the heart of a food chain that runs through an entire ecosystem; however, any given species may exist across many different ecosystems all over the planet. This has obvious implications for how we perceive our role on this planet, because every individual human being is part of many species, and as such, our actions have an effect on everything from microbial life to the health or lack thereof of whole ecosystems.
